VHSL names new assistant director for academic activities


CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — The Virginia High School League is announcing current Harrisonburg High School Athletic Director Darrell Wilson will join the VHSL staff as assistant director for academic activities effective July 1.

         “Darrell was incredibly impressive during the interview process,” said VHSL Executive Director John W. “Billy” Haun, Ed.D. “He brings a diverse educational and professional background to the position, and we’re extremely pleased and thrilled that he will be joining our staff,”

        Wilson, director of student activities at Harrisonburg High School for the past seven years (2011-present), will oversee all planning, organizing, and directing 12 academic activities which offer championships in broadcasting, creative writing, debate, film festival, forensics, magazines, newsmagazines, online news, scholastic bowl, theatre, yearbook, and multimedia.    His other responsibilities will include coordinating the Ken Tilley Student Leader and information services programs.

        At Harrisonburg, Wilson supervised all athletic and activities programs where he coordinated and managed all aspects of the athletic and school activity programs, as well as the overall athletic budget.  He also has an extensive background working with the VHSL coordinating region and state events.  Wilson has directed state golf and outdoor track championships since 2013, as well as coordinating region/conference championships in debate, golf, soccer, volleyball, cross country, cheer, and outdoor track.

        In addition, Wilson was a business/career and technical education teacher at Harrisonburg High School teaching computer information systems, keyboarding, and study skills classes.

        Prior to becoming an educator at Harrisonburg High School, he worked as an assistant and associate director for recreational services at James Madison University (2006-07), Cornell University (1998-2006), the University of Virginia (1995-98), and VCU (1994-1995).  He also worked in the private education industry at Student Advantage and Sound Reading Solutions from 2006-07.

        A career switcher, he did career switcher coursework and student teaching leading to a provisional teaching license with completion of full licensure from Shenandoah University in 2010.

        Wilson received his bachelor’s degree in economics with a sociology minor from the University of Virginia in 1992 and a master’s degree in recreation, parks and tourism from VCU in 1994.
