Two alumni from Charlottesville High School — Amos Heller ’95 and Devin Malone ’98 — performed on last night’s Grammy Award show. Devin Malone (http://devinmalone.com/) plays guitar with Hunter Hayes, and Amos Heller (http://taylorswift.wikia.com/wiki/Amos_Heller) plays bass with Taylor Swift. CHS alumni are active in pop, symphonic, and orchestral groups across the country and around the world. Perhaps most famously, Boyd Tinsley ’82 and Carter Beauford perform with the Dave Matthews Band. Will Anderson, Kit French, Alex Hargrave, and Johnny Stubblefield of the band Parachute first came together while they were at CHS. Other pop or “new” musicians include Montica Germino ’86 and Caroline Buckman ’92. Among classical musicians, Rafe Bell is an internationally noted cellist, Fizt Gary ’07 has performed internationally and is completing a Fulbright Fellowship in Germany, Joshua MacCluer ’96 serves as Principal Trumpet of the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Eva Ryan ’07 was recently named co-Principal Flute of the Lahti (Finland) Symphony Orchestra, and Tim Summers ’90 is a violinist in the Orpheus Quartet. Aside from performing professionally, many other alums have gone on to become music teachers.
