Right Lane on Rt. 29 at Rio Road Closed Due to Potholes; Rio Road Westbound Right Turn Lane Closed

route 29 solutions vdotClosure extends from north entrance of Fashion Sq. Mall through Rio Rd. intersection

CHARLOTTESVILLE — The outside right lane of Route 29 north is closed due to potholes in the temporary pavement at the Rio Road intersection. The closure extends from the north entrance to Fashion Square Mall to just north of Rio Road. Traffic can still make right turns onto Rio Road East.

The lane was closed after today’s rains caused potholes in the temporary asphalt placed in the lane during underground utility work, the same situation that caused the closure of the westbound right turn lane on Rio Road East.

The temporary asphalt covering the utility excavations is scheduled to be removed and replaced with permanent hot mix asphalt pavement. If the weather allows the contractor plans to make those repairs Wednesday morning and reopen the lane to traffic.

The westbound right-turn lane on Rio Road East also remains closed to traffic. Traffic heading west on Rio Road that normally uses that lane to turn right onto Route 29 should make a right turn from the right through lane. The right turn lane into Albemarle Square Shopping Center is open to traffic.

The contractor for the Rio Road intersection, Route 29 widening and the Berkmar Drive extension projects has established a toll-free telephone number for residents to call regarding questions or issues related to those projects. Calls to the number, 844-220-5540, will be returned by Lane-Corman Joint Venture staff within one business day.

More information about the Route 29 corridor improvements can be found on the project website, www.Route29Solutions.org. Current information about upcoming lane closures and other traffic impacts, as well as news about the projects, is posted on the News and Traffic Alerts page.

RIO ROAD WESTBOUND RIGHT TURN LANE CLOSED

Deterioration of temporary asphalt surface led to closure until repairs can be made

CHARLOTTESVILLE — The westbound right turn lane from Rio Road East onto Route 29 northbound has been closed because today’s rain has caused potholes in the temporary asphalt placed in the turn lane during underground utility work.

Traffic heading west on Rio Road that normally uses that lane to turn right onto Route 29 should make a right turn from the right through lane until the contractor can complete  repairs that will restore the travel surface and reopen it to traffic. The right turn lane into Albemarle Square Shopping Center remains open to traffic.

The temporary asphalt covering the utility excavations is scheduled to be removed and replaced with permanent hot mix asphalt pavement. If the weather allows the contractor plans to make those repairs Wednesday morning and reopen the lane to traffic.

The contractor for the three design-build projects: Rio Road intersection, Route 29 widening and the Berkmar Drive extension has established a toll-free telephone number for residents to call regarding questions or issues related to those projects. Calls to the number, 844-220-5540, will be returned by Lane-Corman Joint Venture staff within one business day.
