James Monroe’s Highland to Host Summer French and Spanish Enrichment Camps A partnership with Speak! Language Center and the International School of Charlottesville

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — James Monroe’s Highland furthers a partnership with Speak! Language Center and the International School of Charlottesville with On the Farm with Mr. Monroe, a series of French and Spanish enrichment camps for children ages 4-10. The summer camps are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday-Friday, on July 9-13 and July 16-20.

The camps focus on the French and Spanish languages and forge the connection between these languages and cultures and the legacy of James Monroe. The connection of foreign languages with Highland is strong, based on the experience of James Monroe who was notably engaged in global affairs. Monroe was a diplomat to both France and Spain, and conducted his own negotiation in French for the Louisiana Purchase. Children will experience daily language lessons, private tours of the house and gardens with scavenger hunts, archaeology lessons, historic crafts, nature walks, free play, and stories.

“I couldn’t imagine a more idyllic setting for our Spanish and French summer farm camp,” said Christina Ball, Director of Speak! Language Center. “Highland offers not only beautiful facilities and outdoor play spaces, but also the added bonus of endless educational opportunities – from archeology lessons to cooking on the hearth to feeding the farm animals and exploring the vegetable garden. The location plus our excellent teaching faculty make On the Farm with Mr. Monroe a truly one-of-a-kind collaboration.”

The cost of this event is $325 per student for one week and $625 per student for two weeks. Visit for more information and to register.

About the International School of Charlottesville

The International School of Charlottesville began in 1998 as La Petite Ecole. From it’s foundation as a small, family-oriented and parent-driven preschool, the ISC grew and expanded over several years to include two language immersion programs – French and Spanish – and classes for children ages 2 through Kindergarten, all while maintaining the heart of the original small, mixed-age, 2-teacher classroom.
