Giving up a week of summer to work in hot and humid weather, over 200 students and chaperones from all over Virginia will arrive in Fluvanna County to make an impact through community service projects July 19-25. Sponsored by the Baptist General Association of Virginia (BGAV), Impact Virginia! is a one-week mission opportunity for students that focuses on home repair and spiritual growth.
Impact! Virginia-Fluvanna is a joint venture between the Baptist General Association of Virginia, Fluvanna Habitat for Humanity, the Fluvanna/Louisa Housing Foundation, Fluvanna Meals on Wheels, Effort Baptist Church, and the Central Virginia Baptist Association. The students each paid $275 to come to the camp and will stay at Fluvanna County High School while serving the area.
The groups are coming together to replace and/or repair 10-12 roofs for seniors on fixed incomes who cannot afford to pay for the work. The groups will also do other small repairs on several of the homes, including painting, siding and porch repair. Without the roof replacement and other repairs, many of these homes would not be inhabitable within the next 2-4 years. This program will allow these seniors to age in place and with dignity in their own home.
Mike Himes, Board President of Fluvanna Habitat for Humanity is the Construction Coordinator for this project. He and a crew of Habitat volunteers have been working diligently to visit all the homes that need repairs, and make the final decision on which homes are in the most need, while staying within the parameters of a week-long project. According to Mr. Himes, roofs are the greatest repair need within the county, and when not addressed can lead to massive and irreparable home damage. Fixing a roof before other problems start can add decades to a home’s life.
The Fluvanna/Louisa Housing Foundation has been raising money to help pay for materials for the project. In the fall they received a $5,000 grant from the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation for the project. Additional funds will be provided by Impact Virginia! and the Effort Baptist Church Mission Fund. The Housing Foundation also suggested several clients that had been on a waiting list for roof repairs.
Fluvanna County Meals on Wheels has provided many of the clients that are in desperate need of home repairs, and Effort Baptist Church, along with funding, is providing volunteers to act as Crew Chiefs to oversee the projects.
This is an incredible partnership for Fluvanna County. Working together seamlessly, these groups have come together to impact the lives of 12 seniors in great need. This joint venture is an opportunity to breathe new life into these houses, allowing their owners to remain in their own homes safely, and with dignity, for years to come.
Fluvanna County Habitat for Humanity is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, building homes in partnership with families and local volunteers. Homes are then sold to partner families at no or low-interest, making them affordable. Habitat is a hand-up, not a hand out.
