Community Leaders To Plant Pinwheel Garden at CYFS on April 2nd for Child Abuse Prevention Month

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and Children,Youth & Family Services will be hosting a kick-off event on Monday, April 2nd at 8:30am. Charlottesville Mayor Satyendra Huja, Albemarle County Supervisor Duane Snow, City Police Lieutenant Wendy Lewis and County Police Lieutenant Greg Jenkins will join with other community partners in the planting of our Pinwheel Garden.  Pinwheels are the symbol of child abuse prevention, and the creation of a garden of pinwheels will symbolize the commitment of our agency and our community to ending child abuse. We will plant the garden and hear a few words from these community leaders in recognition of the month. The event will conclude by 9:15.

Children, Youth, and Family Services’ VOCA program provides free direct outpatient counseling to children who have been victims of abuse or neglect as well as to their non-abusing family members including siblings, and parents/guardians. Counseling services are also available for children living in homes where domestic violence has taken place. VOCA Treatment Specialists help children to cope with the trauma of abuse and move forward successfully. Treatment specialists also work to help families learn ways to support the child at home as well as strengthen and implement safety measures to prevent the re-occurrence of trauma in the future.
