Chamber Spotlight: Katie Schiwy, Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce
In one or two sentences, what does your organization do?
At The Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce we connect our members with people, ideas, resources, and opportunities. Joining the Chamber staff has shown me first hand just how valuable being a Chamber member can be, especially for young professionals!
What was your first job?
My first job was as a groundskeeper for my local grocery store plaza in rural Maryland, and the position was shared between my older brothers and I. This early employment opportunity taught me commercial awareness, how to communicate efficiently and effectively, work as a team, problem-solve, and manage money.
How did you choose the field you're in?
Owning a small business, my family has been integrally involved in the Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club in their community; along with my 14 years of service in Girl Scouts, I developed a passion for community engagement young. I first found it difficult to fulfill my desire to contribute in Charlottesville, with an interest in so many aspects of the community, its hard to choose one to commit my time to. I am excited to be part of the Chamber of Commerce team here in Charlottesville, where I have the ability to support hundreds of organizations in various stages in all different sectors.
What's your favorite thing about the Charlottesville area?
My favorite thing about Charlottesville is the diversity of people that live here. I lived in Eastern North Carolina, prior to my move to Charlottesville. I was excited to find that right in the middle of Virginia, is a beautifully diverse and accepting city, that shares the tightknit community that exists in smaller towns, while offering a much wider network of people and organizations.
What is one of your favorite local businesses, and why?
Brooks Family YMCA as well as the encompassing Piedmont YMCA is one of my favorite local businesses, and was my first employer in Charlottesville! They are very welcoming to all members of the community and are happy to offer help to any person that walks through the door. The YMCA is much more than a gym, with teen and youth programming that is incredibly valuable in the Greater Charlottesville Area.
What animal would you be and why?
If I were an animal, I would be a Cat. I love naps in the sun, and can't turn down a back rub. However, I am a bit clumsy; with the agility of a cat, I could better enjoy my favorite cat-like hobby, exploring the amazing trails and parks in and around Charlottesville!
Is there anything that you feel Charlottesville is missing? Spark ideas for others!
Charlottesville Chamber Members! There are lots of creative organizations and businesses that already exist, but it may be difficult for their target audience to find them. Joining the Chamber is a great way to connect with the Charlottesville community, and find resources to help you and your organization succeed.
