Defense Affairs Committee
The Defense Affairs Committee, formerly an affinity group of the Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce, is now housed under the Central Virginia Partnership for Economic Development. The CVPED partnership aims to increase regional economic growth in the defense & intelligence sector by expanding the geographic reach and impact of the DAC across multiple Central Virginia localities.
The Defense Industry's Economic Impact on the Charlottesville Region, a study commissioned by the DAC and authored by Dr. Terance J. Rephann in 2023, describes the region’s defense industry including its history, size, growth, features and the economic impact of the sector as of 2021. Now viewed as the second largest economic generator in the area (after the University of Virginia), the defense sector comes in at an annual impact of just over $1.2 billion dollars. This impact was a driving factor in Albemarle County's purchase and development of Rivanna Futures.
