Stone Mountain Vineyards Earns Gold, Silver and Bronze

Stone Mountain Vineyards' 2005 Petit Verdot earned a Gold medal in the prestigious 2007 Governor's Cup Wine Competition. Stone Mountain's 2006 Barrel Fermented Chardonnay garnered a Silver medal, while the 2004 Cabernet Franc earned a Bronze medal in Virginia's most prestigious wine competition.

The competition, featuring exclusively Virginia wines, evaluated over three hundred fifty wines from around the Old Dominion.

Traditionally a blending grape, Petit Verdot is developing quite a following as an individually selected varietal. Stone Mountain's 2005 vintage features a rich, powerful, dark flavor profile, well structured mid-palate and a climactic memorable finish. The positive impacts of the 2005 growing conditions can be seen the elegant lines of the Gold medal winner. The warm days and cool nights combined with the rocky vineyard soils express themselves in the glass. Maceration in microbins produced a high level of interaction between the skins and the juice resulting in a more complex profile in the glass.

Chris Breiner, Winemaker and Managing Partner of Stone Mountain Vineyards said, "The 2005 Petit Verdot is a powerhouse. Working with Virginia pioneer, Gabriele Rausse, our goal is to grow wines that support Virginia as a leading wine region. I am humbled to receive one of the few Gold medals in this competition and very proud of the volume of high caliber wines currently being produced in Virginia."

Stone Mountain Vineyards is located 1,700 feet above sea level in Dyke, Virginia along the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Greene County winery and tasting room are open for visitors and tastings Friday - Sunday 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Charlottesville Fire Department Receives International Recognition

On August 23rd, the Charlottesville Fire Department was awarded the status of Internationally Accredited Fire Service Agency by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI).

CFAI is a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting fire and emergency service agencies throughout the world in achieving excellence in order to provide continuous quality improvement and enhancement of service delivery to their communities.

The Charlottesville Fire Department is one of only eight departments in the state of Virginia and one of only one hundred and twenty three departments internationally to currently hold the accreditation status. The Charlottesville Fire Department offers fire protection, fire prevention, emergency medical services, and a host of other programs and services to the Charlottesville community.

The comprehensive and detailed analysis of department operations that was a part of the accreditation review process provides an organizational foundation for operational efficiency and effectiveness, provides the community with a detailed evaluation of the department's programs and services, and promotes adherence to sound fiscal and organizational strategies.

For the Charlottesville community this translates to an effective allocation and appropriation of emergency resources resulting in rapid responses to calls for service, low annual fire loss statistics, and contributes to a safe and protected quality of life for all residents and visitors to the community. Because a community's investment in fire mitigation is a proven and reliable predictor of future fire losses insurance companies generally offer lower premiums in communities with better fire protection.

The insurance industry and the international accrediting agency for fire service both recognize the Charlottesville Fire Department for its professional and effective delivery of emergency services.

We appreciate the cooperation and support we receive from our local business community and pledge that we will continue to be a partner in sustaining the economic vitality of Charlottesville by providing fire protection and emergency services responsibly, professionally, and commensurate with maintaining and enhancing the quality of life for all the citizens of our community.

Charlottesville Fire Department Receives $144,649 Through FEMA's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program

The City of Charlottesville announced today that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) awarded a $144,649 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) to the Charlottesville Fire Department (CFD).

In addition, the City Council approved a matching share to bring the total project grant to $160,721. The grant will be used to implement a firefighter wellness and fitness program for all career members of the Department.

The program represents a collaboration with the University of Virginia Medical Center's UVA-WorkMed, a clinical program specializing in occupational medicine services, to establish and implement a health screening process for candidates and current career firefighters. Additional program elements include the creation of a multi-part health and fitness program and continuation of the Department's existing immunization program.

"We have always put an emphasis on fitness at every level. This grant will go a long way in continuing our efforts in making our Department one of the healthiest in the nation," said Charles Werner, Chief of the Charlottesville Fire Department.

AFG awards aim to enhance response capabilities and to more effectively protect the health and safety of the public with respect to fire and other hazards. The grants enable local fire departments and emergency medical services organizations to purchase or receive training, conduct first responder health and safety programs, and buy equipment and response vehicles.

"The Assistance to Firefighters Grants program has been instrumental in building capacity and providing needed resources for our nation's firefighters," said FEMA Administrator R. David Paulison. "From the purchase of equipment to first responder training, the AFG program has helped improve response capabilities and saved lives and property in communities throughout the United States."

Since 2004, AFG has provided almost $2.3 billion in grants to fire departments and first responder organizations to purchase response equipment, personal protective equipment, vehicles and fire prevention activities. AFG is administered cooperatively by two FEMA components: the National Preparedness Directorate and the United States Fire Administration.

The full list of FY 2006 AFG recipients and other information is posted on the AFG website (www.firegrantsupport.com).
Junior League Awards Children, Youth & Family Services Community Partner Grant

In addition to funding the program, Junior League volunteers will also join the playgroups as mentors, supporting young moms as they play with their children and sharing ideas and experiences.
WHTJ Charlottesville PBS Receives Grant for Literacy Program

WHTJ Charlottesville PBS received a $15,000 grant from the Gerald and Paula McNichols Family Foundation to support the station's First Book program. WHTJ's First Book program partners with local mentoring, tutoring and after school programs to provide books at no cost to local children from low- income families. In many cases, these books are the beginning of a home library for local underprivileged children, and the beginning of an empowered life of literacy.

This is the seventh consecutive year that WHTJ Charlottesville PBS has joined with the national First Book organization to offer underprivileged children in the region the chance to own their very own first books, free of charge. Part of WHTJ's mission is to promote education, and by participating in programs like First Book, WHTJ supports literacy and a life-long love of reading among our area's youngsters.

Last year, WHTJ delivered books to children in programs headquartered in Orange County, Charlottesville City, Albemarle County, Nelson County, and Fluvanna County, and throughout Central Virginia. This year, more than 10,000 books will be delivered to children enrolled in mentoring, literacy and educational programs throughout the area.

To request an application or to get involved with First Book-Charlottesville, contact WHTJ's Community Relations Coordinator, Rachael Kesler, at 434.295.7671, or rkesler@whtj.org.
