A New, Different Corner Comes to the Area: 106.1 The Corner

A new, different radio station, 106.1 The Corner, has signed on the air in the Charlottesville market. 106.1 The Corner, WCNR, formerly owned by Force Five Communications, LLC, has been sold to the Charlottesville Radio Group. As part of the agreement, Force Five and the Charlottesville Radio Group have entered into a Local Marketing Agreement whereby the Charlottesville Radio Group will, subject to the rules and regulations of the Federal Communications Commission and the terms of the Local Marketing Agreement, supply programming services to the station.

Charlottesville Radio Group Vice President/General Manager Dennis Mockler said, “I’ve launched a number of radio stations during my career, but never anything like The Corner. We solicited a lot of input from potential listeners throughout the area as to what they wanted to hear in determining how different The Corner was going to be. But we are not stopping there. We will continue to solicit input via our website and phone calls as 106.1 The Corner continues to develop and evolve to serve this area’s particular tastes. Currently, we are playing 10,000 songs in a row to give everyone a chance to sample the station.”

Computers4Kids Upgrades Operations with High Tech Donation from Advanced Network Systems

Advanced Network Systems, Inc. has donated a complete 3Com® IP-technology based telephone system to Computers4Kids. The donation included all equipment along with required installation services and two years of maintenance support. Advanced Network Systems recently set up the new system at C4K’s new location on Second Street SE and was able to use the existing data cabling in C4Ks facility; using a single cable to carry both computer and voice traffic.

“This is a wonderful contribution by Advanced Network Systems,” said Kala Somerville, Executive Director of Computers4Kids. “Their generous donation of this telephone system is helping C4K to improve its communications with students, volunteers, parents and the community.”

Lorri Haney, vice president of marketing for Advanced Network Systems commented, “We are thrilled to have been able to make this contribution to C4K. Providing the equipment and installation services for the phone system, takes the burden of these expenses off of C4K; the system will also greatly simplify their administration, making the cost of operation much lower over the long-term. Both of these things will allow C4K to devote their resources to fostering the best learning environment possible for their students.”

Raising Cane's Opens Charlottesville Location

Raising Cane's -- "one love: great tasting chickn fingers" -- opened their new location in Charlottesville with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, September 14. City Mayor David Brown was on hand wielding the scissors, surrounded by an enthusiastic crew of new Raising Cane's employees. Raising Cane's is celebrating its 10th year in 2006, and this, their Charlottesville location, is their 49th store. By the way, that's "Raising Cane" in the middle, founder Todd Grave's dog. He makes it to all the openings.

Keeler Obenshain Changes Name to Lenhart Obenshain; Names New Shareholder

Keeler Obenshain PC, a business-focused law firm with offices in Harrisonburg, Charlottesville, and Richmond, has announced the change of its name to Lenhart Obenshain PC. Jeffrey G. Lenhart has served as managing partner of the law firm for the last four years and will continue in that capacity. In his law practice, Mr. Lenhart serves as general counsel to numerous businesses and professional associations including medical and dental practices, accounting firms and other professional services in Central Virginia, the Shenandoah Valley and West Virginia. Formerly named partner Steven J. Keeler will be joining the Charlottesville office of McGuire Woods.

Lenhart Obenshain has also named a new shareholder, Nancy R. Schlichting, in its Charlottesville office. Ms. Schlichting came to the firm two years ago, having spent the prior fifteen years focusing her practice on commercial litigation and litigation related to health care in Florida. Ms. Schlichting practiced in Florida after receiving her law degree from the University of Miami. With Lenhart Obenshain, Ms. Schlichting concentrates her practice on high stakes litigation including shareholder disputes, contract matters and probate litigation, complementing the firm’s long standing business, estate planning and tax practice.

Miller Center of Public Affairs, WVPT Partner to Broadcast "Miller Center Forums"

The Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia is teaming with WVPT—Virginia’s Public Television to launch the “Miller Center Forums,” a broadcast version of the popular nonpartisan weekly lecture series that connects public officials, scholars, and journalists with students and well-informed lay audiences to discuss the critical issues of the day.

Beginning Friday, Sept. 15, at 9:00 p.m. ET, WVPT will broadcast the Forums, held in the Miller Center’s Newman Pavilion, to audiences throughout the Shenandoah Valley and Central Virginia region, and offer them to public television stations throughout Virginia.

“Working with WVPT provides an important opportunity to bring even more people into the kind of thoughtful conversations that the Forums are known for,” said George Gilliam, assistant director for public programs at the Miller Center. “It allows us to expand what we’ve accomplished with our live audiences and webcasts to provide a genuine give-and-take on the most critical questions that we face as a nation.”
